Hidden Collision Damage & Insurance Supplements

Why a collision estimate can change after disassembly, what a supplement documents, and questions to ask about approval, repair costs and timing.

Why the first estimate may change

An initial collision estimate records the damage that can be assessed at that stage. A bumper cover or body panel can conceal other affected parts. Disassembly may reveal repair needs that were not visible in photographs or during an exterior inspection. A changed estimate should explain the new findings rather than simply provide a new total.

For example, a rear bumper may show scraped paint while an attachment behind the cover is also damaged. The repair plan could then include both bumper repair and paint refinishing and the newly identified part. This is an illustration, not a diagnosis of your vehicle.

What is an insurance supplement?

A supplement documents proposed additions or changes to the initial repair estimate. It may describe newly identified damage, revised parts needs or additional labor and materials. AMICIS AUTO BODY assists with supplement documentation and insurer communication for collision repairs. The insurer reviews coverage; documenting a repair need does not guarantee that it will be paid.

Repair authorization and insurance review

Ask the shop to explain the revised scope and cost before authorizing additional work. An insurer reviewing a supplement does not replace your repair authorization. If an item is disputed, ask the shop what repair it supports and ask the insurer for its coverage explanation. Confirm any amount you may owe before deciding how to proceed.

California’s Bureau of Automotive Repair explains these responsibilities in its repair authorization guidance. Its tear down guidance explains why disassembly can help establish collision damage.

Questions to ask when the scope changes

  • What additional damage was found, and can you show me the documentation?
  • Which parts, labor or refinishing operations changed from the initial estimate?
  • What has the insurer approved, what is still under review, and what might I owe?
  • What work am I being asked to authorize?
  • Does the change affect parts orders or the expected completion date?
  • If I have rental coverage, does it cover the revised repair period?

Timing, transportation and records

There is no single supplement turnaround time for every repair. Documentation, insurer review, parts availability and the additional work can affect the schedule. Keep copies of estimates, revisions and authorizations, and request an updated timeline when the scope changes. AMICIS AUTO BODY does not provide rental vehicles; confirm rental benefits and limits with your insurer.
